Search Protect Removal from Chrome, Firefox and IE

About Search Protect

Search Protect detected by your anti-malware tool likely means you have a generic potentially not wanted application (PUP) in your system. This is a type of contamination that won’t do severe harm to your system directly. Usually, PUPs claim to be handy applications so as to prompt users to authorize them to remain installed. It might come as a system optimization tool or anti-virus program, a game, or a browser add-on. PUPs are fundamentally applications that can install without requiring your explicit permission, and then try to deceive you into buying worthless services or attempt to get money in other ways. If your PUP is a computer optimizer or a security utility, the program would attempt to encourage you to buy the complete version of the program, while browser add-ons might display you loads of ads so as to make revenue. Since PUPs are of no use to you, it would be best if you remove Search Protect. Search_Protect2.png

How are PUPs spread

Since there oftentimes are official sites for potentially unwanted programs, it’s not impossible that you downloaded it yourself. If you can recall installing it, do more research about the programs you will install.

The bundling method may have also been used to install the program without requiring your permission. Software bundling is a commonly used method but you might not know how it works. Oftentimes, extra items come added to freeware, and need to be manually deselected. Those additional offers usually are concealed, which is why a lot of users don’t deselect them.

The only way you can block those items from installing is if you actually pay attention when installing applications. In order to see the items, Advanced (Custom) options need to be opted for. All extra items will be visible in those settings, so you will have the option of unchecking all of them.

What does Search Protect do

If your anti-virus (whether you prefer Kaspersky, Symantec, Avast, Malwarebytes, TrendMicro or ESET) is detecting something as Search Protect, your system possibly has a generic PUP installed. While a lot of security application find the PUP, it doesn’t particularly put your device at risk all that much. PUPs don’t directly damage your system, and instead focus on making revenue by fooling you into buying programs or by exposing you to ads. PUPs frequently show a lot of ads, and that is one of the first signs.

In short, since PUPs are generally scam applications, it isn’t advised to buy them. Also keep in mind that adverts generated by PUPs are likely to expose you to viruses and scams, so engaging with them is not advised.
